General News
Julia Henderson (AYP, Co-Principal cello) traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, where she performed Dvorak's Cello Concerto in B minor in concert with the St. Petersburg Symphony on July 6, 2009. She then spent two days in recording sessions with the symphony in order to record the concerto. Maestro Vladimir Lande, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Principal Guest Conductor of the St. Petersburg Symphony, invited Julia to perform and conducted the concert and recording sessions.

Cogan Concerto Competition: Fedor Ouspensky (AYSO, Co-Concertmaster violin) performed the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Capital City Symphony and Victoria Gau on Sunday, October 25, 2009, 5:00pm at the Atlas Performing Arts Center as winner of the competition.
Fairfax Symphony Orchestra Feuer Memorial String Scholarship Competition: the following musicians are finalists:
- Eric Adamshick (AYP, Co-Principal cello)

- Ryan Hintzman (AYP, cello)
- Mikey Lankenau (AYP, viola)
- Jackie Lin (AYP, violin)
- Evan Pfeiffer (AYP, violin)

- Hannah Schoen (AYP, Principal 1st violin)
International New Praise Support Society competition: Tiffany Kim (AYSO, violin) won the grand prize and performed at the Kennedy center in December 2009.
National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellowship Program: an orchestral training program for high school students. There are only 20 students in the program. The program has many benefits, some of which include watching NSO dress rehearsals, meeting the soloists, free NSO tickets, multiple opportunities to perform on the Millennium Stage; and they pay for all lessons with an NSO member.

National Symphony Orchestra Youth Orchestra Day participants are recommended by musicians of the NSO and area youth orchestras such as the American Youth Philharmonic, DC Youth Orchestra, Maryland Classic Youth Philharmonic, Washington Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, and the Youth Orchestras of Prince William. After many rehearsals and sectionals, these talented student musicians rehearse once with members of the NSO and then share stands with these NSO members in the Youth Orchestra Day Concert:

Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition:
- Patrick Miller (AYP, viola) was awarded 1st place in the Senior Division, Low Strings on Saturday, January 9, 2010.
- Heejin Alice Park (AYSO, Principal 2nd clarinet) was awarded 1st place in the Intermediate Devision (9th & 10th Grade).
Teri and Shari Malone Foundation: Turner Thornberry (AYSO, bass trombone) was a 2009 award recipient for music.
U.S. Army Orchestra Young Artist Competition: the following musicians will perform alongside members of the U.S. Army Orchestra in a concert at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Hall and Arts Center on April 25, 2010 at 3:00pm:
- Brian Hong (AYP, Co-Concertmaster violin) won 1st place and will play Ravel's Tzigane with the U.S. Army Orchestra at the April 25th concert
- Niles Watson (AYP, Principal flute) won 3rd place
- Nathan Kim (AYP, Co-Assistant Principal cello) was a Finalist
- Samantha Kline (AYP, violin) was a Finalist
- Eric Adamshick (AYP, Co-Principal cello) was awarded Honorable Mention
- Andrew Eshbach (AYP, Principal oboe) was awarded Honorable Mention
- Dominic Favia (AYP, trumpet) was awarded Honorable Mention
