Senior Spotlight: Andrew Guo, Flute
AYPO Marketing
What is your current AYPO ensemble?
Symphonic Orchestra (AYSO)
What AYPO ensembles have you played in and for how long?
AYSO in 2024-2025
What college/university do you plan on attending this fall?
College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland.
What do you hope to do after graduation or your more long-term goals?
“At UMD, I hope to get my Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and Mathematics in two years and a plus one year Masters in Computer Science. Long term, I want to get a PHD in Math, then decide where to go from there.”
A favorite, or memorable AYPO experience?
“At the first AYPO concert this year, I felt pretty nervous about playing my first ever solo in an ensemble. Prior to the concert, I had played pretty poorly, but through the support of my fellow flute players, I was able to pull through and play relatively normal.”
What musician, conductor, or orchestra inspires you and why?
“I really love listening to Rachmaninov's pieces (beyond just his piano concertos), as I find his ability to push through his depression and write such emotional music empowering. I've recently been listening to his Cello and Piano Sonata and the Preludes.”
Your advice for young musicians?
“Practice with purpose! Practice can very easily feel boring or sluggish, so I suggest you to change up how you approach it. I used to hate practicing, and this definitely helped for me on both piano and flute.”
Congratulations, Andrew!
